A day trip to Singapore
writen by Paul 张建和)
Next on our schedule was a day trip to Singapore, our neighbor. In order to get there, we took a bus from Larkin bus terminal.  There were 4 to 5 platforms reserved for busses to Singapore. We immediately hopped on to a SBS Transit bus, and paid the fare of RM1.20.
Within 20minutes, we reached the causeway checkpoint. We got down and verified our documents. We then board another bus which takes us across the Johore-Singapore causeway link. Reaching Woodlands checkpoint, we were ordered to get down for a second time. We quickly filled up the form for our entry. This time around, the atmosphere was gloom. When I neared the counter, i got really nervous, the thought of rejection kept flashing inside my head. The steely faces of immigrant officers did not help to calm me down. Once cleared, we board another bus to the nearest monorail station en route to go to the famed Sentosa Island. Travelling around Singapore was quite troublesome as we do not have those “easy cards”.
In Singapore, everything is clean and efficient. The roads are clean, the air is clean, and more importantly the signboards are straightforward and clear. What amazes me more than Singapore's cleanliness was their transport system. Besides the hassle of buying travel card dozens of time, getting around Singapore was quite a breeze. The fact that we were able to get around Singapore so easily already proved their efficiency. With just monorail and local buses, we can practically reach every nook and cranny in Singapore. I wonder why our government never try to incorporate our neighbor's impeccable transport system in our country. With this, there will be less jams and more tourists will be able to reach Malaysia's 'jewel'

Harborfront, the only way to Sentosa island, was our second destination in Singapore. Directly above the station was Vivocity. House inside is a series of amazing shops. The Candy Empire was quite an eye catcher. The shop was filled with imported chocolates never sold in Malaysia. Max and I kept gawking at all those delicious looking chocolates. How I wished I had brought enough money to buy everything inside the shop. In the end, it was up to Siew Lan to drag us out of the shop. With the chocolates out of sight, our attention was back to Sentosa Island.
Our first stop in Sentosa was Resort World Sentosa. One step out of the monorail and we straight away got into our “shooting” mode. Max and I hogged the camera and were camwhoring all the time. Siew Lan, being forced to become our cameraman can’t help but roll her eyes. While we were busy with the Universal Studios’ globe, a man approached Max. In his hand, was a camera even bigger than Max’s DSLR. It was a 1DS mark III. He pleaded for Max to help him take a picture with the globe. Being a shutterbug, Max jumped on that opportunity to hold his dream camera. The camera was huge, even Max’s face was no match for it. All it took was a “shick” sound. Everything was done in a split second. The man was full of praise for Max’s photography skill. Complimented for the first time, Max was over the moon. He began shooting with more confidence.
Less than 5minutes passed, and Max was asked to snap yet another photo for that man. This time, it was trickier. There was intense sunlight behind him. This condition requires yet another power up. With the external flash loaded to counter the sunlight, everything was good to go. Just when Max was about to push the button, the man shouted. Nervous, we looked around to see if there was anything wrong. He pointed in Max’s direction. Max was perplexed and dare not move a single muscle. “You are blocking the infrared!”said that man. Feeling embarrassed, he quickly pushed the button and returned the camera. So much for a good photographer.

The RWS casino, being the first in Singapore, was directly underneath the Universal Studios theme park. All our hopes of winning the Lamborghini were dashed when we saw the minimum age required to enter. It was time to move on. This time, we headed for the beach station. Though the beach was man-made, it was nothing less than perfect. The long beaches there were flooded with people. It was a winding stretch of beach and every corner was filled with activities. Halfway across the beach, we heard screaming coming from above. Directly above us was a 450m long flying fox. The ride looked very exciting and scary. All the more reason I would have tried if I had the budget.

Although Singapore is a small country everything they do is not small. What It gives us was such a strong and good first impression. I can tell that when they intend to do something, they do it right. When they build something big, they made it so that it lasts long, they maintain it. Sentosa Island had been a popular tourist destination for 2 decades already and its still attraction both local and foreign tourists. Unlike Malaysia, with the 'tidak apa' attitude, short vision and halfheartedness, what our government do or implement will not last long. Look at all our parks and zoo, how well are they maintained? No one is willing to go after the first year of their opening. Malaysia has a long way to go!
