The Sky is The Limit

By Paul Chong

While we were walking on Petaling Street, I kept looking around for a big compound suitable for a school that holds more than 1500 students. I couldn't find it. Just when I was about to give up, my friend gave me a pat and told me to turn around. It surprised me to no end. There was no mistaking it. The 15 storey building in front of me was exactly the Confucius private high school I was looking for. At first, I thought that Confucius private high school was the only school that was so unlucky. To my further despair, the other two private schools that I came across in KL were not off any better. Kun Cheng was at least 8 storeys high and Tsun Jin was all crammed up in a small area.

I cannot stop thinking to myself that how can a school of 15 storey high be built. How can students be allowed to study in a place like this? Not only is the area of the compound so small, the surrounding area is not good as well. With a rubbish area at the bottom, and a all day market surrounding the school, how can students study in peace? Is that the best the people of Kuala Lumpur can do? I understand that the Chinese community like to stand their ground, hold firm to tradition, but they need to think of our future students. Think of those who are suffering in that 15 storey high building. Think of those classes that hold more than 50 students. Have they enough space to turn around? Have they enough space to relax? Have they got the chance to study in a REAL school? A school that matches educational philosophy should have a generous amount of gardens, big field, ample sports facilities and classrooms. We must provide more space for students to walk about. More facilities for students to relax and exercise. Enough of spaces for students to turn around in class.

Do not just think about the holding our pride, pride is nothing when everything is lost because of our pride. Think of the future generation, find a place for these students to study peacefully; find a bigger place, so that these students are able to run about. In the case of Confucius private high school, I understand that the old building has sentimental and historical values, but I sincerely feels that the school needs to move to a new place for a better future. Even if they insist on staying, they should at least build a new campus. Do not deprive the pupils in KL the privilege of studying in chinese independent schools. Do not make 1500 students study in a 15 storey school. Let one classroom have 30-40 students. Create a new and bigger(not higher) Confucius private high school for people of KL.

During my latest visit to Kuala Lumpur( two weeks after our trip), I had the privilege to visit the school. Everything was just as I had thought. The students did not have enough space at all. That time, The students inside were having PE lesson. Not one student can run about freely without fearing he or she might bump into other students or teachers. What can the students say about their high school life after they graduate? Brag about themselves having studied in the tallest school in Malaysia?

The seventh floor was where the library situated. When I looked down, my body was shivering. I could not imaging looking down from the fifteenth floor. Can a person with a phobia of height study there? Should a school provide students an obvious facility to commit suicide? Death is certain if any of the students fell from that height. If a malicious student accidentally knocked his friend and the latter fell to his death, who would be held responsible?

I know that tall building in the likes of Petronas Twin Tower, Menara KL, Taipie101 and KOMTAR looks magnificent. It shows the pride of the nation and how advance our technologies are. But tall buildings should not be the case in educational institutes of secondary stage. The principle of “the sky is the limit” should not be in the text of an architect when planning out a school buildings. Which would you prefer, as a student? The tallest school or the biggest field? If this situation persist, I daresay one day, Malaysia might produce the tallest high school building in the world.
